Home remedy For Ear Infections

Products

A home remedy for an adult ear infection is not the same as that recommended for children. Let's look first at the various home remedies for adult ear infections.

The first is the application of colloidal silver to the ear as an ear wash. It can be ingested as well. Colloidal silver is a natural
antibiotic. Vitamin C is a great help with ear infections as it helps fight infection by boosting the body's immune system. Zinc is another home remedy for the reduction of an ear infection. If the infection has just started Echinacea can help, although it must not contain alcohol.

To help relieve the pain of an ear infection while waiting for the infection to subside there is a home remedy mixture that works very well. You simply combine lobelia and olive or garlic oil and put a few drops of this mixture into the affected ear. The ear should be then plugged with cotton.

A child's ear infection can just as effectively be treated with a home remedy. The problem with effectively treating children is that it's harder to detect an ear infection as they're not able to tell you themselves. The first time a child has an ear infection she or he can be treated without prescribed antibiotics although the child must be carefully monitored during treatment. One medical study of 240 children under the age of two were diagnosed with an ear infection and then treated with a home remedy for four days. At the end of the four days, only three percent of these kids needed prescription antibiotics. For the other 97 percent the home remedy had cured the ear infection.

The caution here is that any high fever or severe pain should warrant a trip to the doctor. If the child is an infant just the presence of a fever is reason to contact a physician.

Studies in Israel found a home remedy that helped ease the pain of ear infections. They combined extracts of garlic and St. John's wort. When treating children's ear infection with home herbal remedies, however, a call to the doctor is warranted ahead of time. Herbal remedies are not regulated nor are they standardized and so safety and quality is not always clear. For example, the plants used as ear infection home remedies that contain Otikon can have some nasty side effects.

Valsalva's maneuver, which we often use at high elevations and during air travel, is not recommended for relief of ear ache in children when there is the possibility of an infection. The maneuver is to plug the nose and then try to blow it. Another contra-indicated home remedy when trying to battle a child's ear infection is the use of aspirin or other products that contain aspirin. Should the child's illness turn out to be the flu or chicken pox the aspirin can cause a serious ailment called Reye's Syndrome.
