Stress is something we all have to live with every day of our lives. It's easy enough for the so-called experts to say that a proper positive mental attitude can do away with stress altogether, but the actual fact of the matter is, you can't. Whether it's from the home, office, or friends, everyday interaction with our environment inevitably leads to a buildup of stress.
There are many possible sources, large and small, and unless we do something to relieve the pressure, it can build up until it
becomes harmful. Actually, mild stress is a positive and useful thing, as it can help give us a physical and mental edge when life's pressures hit us. However, when stress gets overwhelming, we have to learn to recognize the early warning signs of a build up of stress to a harmful level so we can take preventive measures before we burn ourselves out.
Stress symptoms can be categorized into two levels based on the amount of stress buildup, moderate and major. Moderate stress levels require
preventive measures before they worsen, and are more or less easily correctible. Major stress levels require more serious measures to fix, usually requiring a physician or psychiatrist trained in dealing with stress-related disorders. Aside from the two levels, the symptoms of negative stress buildup can further be split into physical and mental/emotional types. Learn to recognize these symptoms so you can act accordingly if you find that they are applicable to you.
Moderate Physical Symptoms
- one of the first physical effects of harmful stress buildup is a release of toxins in the body. These toxins cause general muscle tension and fatigue, as well as migraines and headaches. A fairly common indicator for most people is pain in the back, shoulders, and neck as well.
Aside from the effects caused by these toxins, other moderate physical symptoms include high blood pressure, hypertension ulcers, diarrhea, an upset stomach, heartburn, and gas. Another thing to look out for is cold
sweaty hands and feet. A relatively harmless but nonetheless embarrassing effect of stress to look out for too is accelerated hair loss.
Major Physical Symptoms - if the above symptoms hit, and are not corrected, the situation worsens and leads to more serious physical disorders. Irregular or accelerated heartbeats and palpitations, usually combined with rapidity and shortness of breath, may lead to cardiac arrest, and needs to be treated immediately.
Another major symptom is
sudden vulnerability to flu, colds, and sickness in general. This means that the body's immune system has already been affected adversely. Lastly, one other major symptom which is not necessarily life threatening but DEFINITELY a major consideration for all of my fellow males out there is impotency. I don't think I need to go into that one further.
Moderate Mental/Emotional Symptoms - insomnia, crankiness, increased nervousness, moody depressiveness, an upsurge of phobias, lack of focus and
control, and mild memory problems are all mental indicators of stress buildup. This basically means that your forebrain is getting overworked, and is slowly relinquishing a majority of it's control over to your hindbrain, whose functions are far more primal and animalistic. This is usually because the mind interprets stress as a "threat", and reacts by going into "fight or flight" mode.
Major Mental/Emotional Symptoms - once the above mental symptoms hit, if they are ignored they usually
worsen as the mind gives more control over to the hindbrain. Reactions of people at this point become far more drastic and potentially life threatening. Phobias devolve into outright paranoia, crankiness surges into actual violent behavior, the mild memory problems become short term memory loss, and the moody depression intensifies into self-destructive and suicidal urges. Needless to say, if the stress build up has hit this level, it's time to get therapy.
These are the symptoms of
harmful stress buildup. If you find that any of them apply to you, here are a few things to do: If the symptoms show that the levels of stress you're currently undergoing are still moderate, look into medication or anti stress programs that will help you deal with them. These preventive measures should help keep the stress within manageable levels. On the other hand, if the indicators show that you're experiencing a major level of stress, find immediate help from an expert before the situation gets any worse.
