How To NOT Blow The World Up: Stress Management Techniques

Products

Stress. Scary, scary, word. It brings to mind images of people in an office typing away at a keyboard, glaring into a monitor and muttering foul imprecations on the dire state of the universe at large, or of people tied up in straitjackets or on the couches of a friendly neighborhood shrink, having cracked under the pressure of their daily lives. Okay fine, stress may not seem like a laughing matter, and maybe it's not - it actually has a lot of negative effects on people, ranging from relatively harmless things like going bald, to real-life
mental breakdowns.

Before any of these things happen, it's best to find a way to deal with the "S" word before it gets out of hand. Here are a few things that you may want to try out to keep yourself from taking a chainsaw to everything in your immediate vicinity.

Define the source of your stress - oooh yesss, this should be good. Make a list, if you have to, but find out exactly WHAT factors are causing you stress. There may be more than one, and making a list actually helps you to concretize your exact sources of undue aggravation. Once you have your hit list down, (oops, wrong choice of words there) start making solid plans to deal with them, one way or the other.

Naturally, some problems cant be solved, and some hurdles cant be overcome. It's a good piece of advice to deal with the problems that you CAN handle first, and tackle the ones that arent immediately solveable later. The simple act of even trying to solve your problems gives a feeling of accomplishment and action. Usually, stress buildup from problems is caused by psychological loops where you focus more and more on the problem, and less on the actual solution to it. Identifying the sources of your stress, and more importantly, acting on them, can get rid of the proverbial personal rut which a lot of people get stuck in.

Get more exercise and eat right - yes, I mean you. Having a proper diet and getting REGULAR exercise keeps you from getting stressed out. Good nutrition helps a person cope with stress simply by dint of making a person healthier, and exercise keeps adrenaline from building up, so that during times of aggravation the body doesn't suddenly flood with all that happy go-go juice that makes your Urge To Smash Things go off the meter. Exercise keeps the adrenaline down. Speaking of adrenaline, you may also want to lay off the chocolate bars and coffee...

Read a book - this helps a lot. Whether you're into novels from one genre or another, or into hard, factual scientific or historical journals, reading a book provides not only a form of temporary escapism, it also stimulates your mind by getting your brain focused on something other than what's stressing you out. Sometimes, you can even come back from reading a good book with fresh insights into the things that are troubling you, and these new insights may actually help you solve them.

Listen to more music - tell me what a person listens to and i'll tell you what his or her soul is like. It's a truism that music moves people in many ways. When stressed out, listen to music that you like. Make sure that the songs you listen to evoke a mood in you that helps you relax and/or keeps you upbeat and happy. Whatever you do, for your own sake, DONT listen to songs that will only ampify negatve feelings. It doesn't make sense to listen to sappy music when you're heartbroken, for example. That's not therapy, that's masochism. Not a good idea. Listen to stuff that'll either perk you up or keep you chill.

Try a creative, artistic hobby - inside just about everyone lurks the soul of a poet, an artist, a musician, a dancer, or an actor. Most people just don't follow up on those urges for a variety of reasons, ranging from lack of skill to environmental influences.

It's a general saying that everyone should find a new hobby when life gets stale; however, instead of simply heading to the gym to pump iron or getting into a new sport, try an artistic hobby that involves self-expression and creativity. The fact of the matter is, you don't even have to be very good to get into art. If you LIKE doing it, skill follows over time and with practise. The important thing is to put your heart and soul into it. From a psychological standpoint, this can help deal with stress because it's a form of catharsis. On relatednote, it also helps you de-stress once you actually start enjoying it.

SMIIIIILLLLLEEEEEEEE - above all things, stress has NO physical causes. It's all purely psychological. So the choice is entirely yours whether to keep a smile on your face or a frown, on whether to laugh at the sun or cry howling up at the moon. Keep a positive and cheerful attitude, and you'd be surprised how those things that seemed to be such huge, insurmountable burdens before are actually nothing more than stuff to chuckle at.
