There's actually nothing wrong with stress. Despite what a lot of people may think, stress is not simply an unavoidable part of our lives, it is actually an essential part of it. Stress and pressure are what drive us to excel in a task, to become sharper, faster, more focused and intense. Without stress to push us to new heights of excellence, we would actually fall into eventual stagnation wrought of complacency. However, like all things in this world, an excess of
stress can be detrimental to a person.
To use an analogy, think of an old-style steam powered engine. If we are the engines, and the steam can be likened to stress, then you can understand; the steam is what powers the engine to move, but if the steam builds up to a level of pressure that the engine can't contain, it blows up. The same can be said of people and stress. To avoid the build up of EXCESS stress in your life, here are a few tried and tested stress
control methods you should look into.
Anti-Stress Medication - these are actual medical products sold on the open market designed to help people fight stress. These generally fall into two major categories, each one made to address a different form of stress. The first type of medication deals with mental stress and actually contains chemicals that a person's brain needs to cope with excess levels of mental and emotional stress and fatigue.
While
it's true what they say that It's All In The Mind, personal discipline and attitude can only carry you so far. This type of medication actually supplies nutrients to the brain to help this process along. The second and more traditional type of anti-stress medication takes a more physical approach, in the form of sedatives and/or muscle relaxeants designed to help deal with physical stress. These medications usually also contain elements that help a person's body get rid
of toxins that naturally build up under extremes of stress. Both of these general types have their merits and applications, just choose the one that suits your personal needs more.
Stress Toys - Funny as it may seem, actual studies have shown that the child-like need to play games stays with us even through our entire adulthood. Stress toys are created with this in mind; these are products that come in all shapes and sizes, and their sole purpose is to allow
people in stressful office environments to take a few minutes away from a busy work schedule to just blow off steam.
While any good sport or other physical activity can do the same thing, people are usually too busy to take time to hit the gym or the courts. These stress toys can at least do the trick in situations where a quick fix is required. Aside from the well-known, loved, and abused Stress Balls that people squeeze, maim, and crush to entertain
themselves (usually accompanied by mental images of wringing someone's neck instead of the stressball), other gadgets abound, like velcro dartboards, miniature sports fields with little rubber balls and plastic goals or hoops, there are even soft dummy punching bags for those who need to blow off steam in a more violent (yet legal) fashion. Whatever floats your boat, if you're going to buy a stress toy to help you cope in your office there's only one real requirement;
make sure it amuses you.
Anti Stress Programs - given all the hype about the damaging effects of stress made by the media in recent years, there has been an upsurge of stress relief programs out there. These run a very wide and sometimes confusing gauntlet, ranging from psychologists claiming to teach perfect stress-control through personal discipline, to more exotic programs from the far east teaching yoga and zen meditation.
Not to disparage
these programs, some of them actually DO work, and work well for some people. But if you decide to undergo one of these stress management programs, don't look merely at the credentials of the person or of the institution conducting the seminar. Instead, make sure that the program you pick offers an approach and mindset that fits your personality and lifestyle. This requires a bit of introspection, but as long as you find a program that actually works for you, that's the important thing.
